Ancient history, mineral springs and hospitable people
Plovdiv claims to be the oldest continually inhabited city in Europe – the beginning of its history dates back to 4,000 years BC. The city is built at the foot of the seven hills, which is why it is often called “The City in the hills ” or ” seven hills “. Thracians were the first to establish a settlement on this site due to its geographical advantage and soil futility. The fortress they built was further developed by Macedonians and then Romans.
A city with many Faces
During the period of the Roman Empire, Plovdiv, was an important regional and rehabilitation centre. The city flourished with a large-scale construction of buildings, facilities and roads. The city is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country and a cultural and economic centre of southern Bulgaria. Plovdiv is most loved for his romantic old town, full of colorful and beautiful 19th century mansions, which are now museums, galleries and guest houses. The cobblestone alleys and nostalgia for the Renaissance are only part of history.
A resort for recreation, cultural tourism and enjoying the little things of life.
Plovdiv which has been known for centuries for its healing mineral springs, is a city through which several highly developed civilizations have passed, each of which have leaved a vivid and indelible mark on the history of this magical place that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.
Near Plovdiv is another centuries old balneotherapy center. Hissarya emerged as a small village in the second half of the seventeenth century, rising to the well-preserved ruins of ancient and medieval buildings. Mineral water is literally everywhere in Hisarya & Starosel. The valley of springs has different physicochemical characteristics and their temperature ranges from 31 to 51 ° C.
The Valley of the Thracian Kings
Evidence of the glittering and transformative history of Hissar are the various names that this place has had over the millennia – Diocletianopolis, Vetus Augusta Aria, Termeitisina, Toplica. The Thracians , who are unsurpassed masters of architecture and the applied arts, make Hissar a magical nymphaeum, a healing and religious sanctuary, part of the mythical kingdom of the Odrissi tribe. The Walls of Hisar during its Roman era have reached up to 13 meters, with 4 magnificent gates, 44 defence towers – part of which can still be seen today.
