The Valley of Roses
The importance of the Demascena Rose in Bulgarian culture
The Valley of Roses lies in the very heart of Bulgaria. From here comes the world famous ‘rose oil’, the essential ingredient in any perfume. The Valley of Roses is the cradle of ancient Thracian culture, also known as the Valley of the Thracian kings. The symbol of Bulgaria is the ‘Rose Flower’, famous for its precious oil which is obtained in the Rose Valley, located in the heart of central Bulgaria and the cradle of the ancient Thracian culture. Today the Demascena rose attracts visitors from all over the world, especially from Japan, where the rose has cultural significance.
When is the right time to visit the Valley of the Roses
Definitely the best time to observe and take part in the process of picking roses in the fields is from late May to late June. The Rose Festival is held over four weekends in June, with centuries old rituals devout to the Damascena pink roses held in different villages. In these early morning events, you can actually join the process of picking roses yourself. Here was located one of the largest Thracian kingdoms with many tombs to visit and several wineries that can give a taste of your journey to the valley.
